elephants fighting
Poem by EKU McGRED, UK-based Sierra Leonian poet and motivator.

Living in a land you call your home
But can never call your own
Strange things do happen when elephants fight
Begging bowls fly
All around the world they fly; yes they do
Begging drops of water to keep the young ones alive
Strange things do happen when elephants fight

Schooled from two opposing camps; none with a mind of their own
The fight is on even before it starts; all for one and none for all
It’s democrats versus republicans, communists versus socialist,
Open your eyes, blinded by greed and see
It’s a fool’s game hatched for your very own destruction
Black versus white, East versus West, socialist versus democrats, tribe versus tribe

Poverty and suffering can be a thing of the past
But only when the fire of unity, equity and justice is set ablaze
One purpose, one love, one land; water for all
One for all and none for one, a piece for everyone
Sharing life, sharing love, sharing all

The grasses grow, the birds sing
Alas! The fight is over, elephant dance begins
Husk down, pound the ground
The water tables must turn
Pound on, pound till
The sweet scent of fresh water rises from its hiding place
