Gogo at Bradford Art Festival

We present to you our 6th gallery e-xhibition! Okay, okay, so we know it’s been quite a while since we had one (since Ankeli’s e-xhibition in March), but we are making it up to you in a big way now. We present to you a master artist, Gogo Anyanwu, and his stunning collection of paintings (18 in number) -all available for sale!

Gogo at BAFA

Gogo has a broad artistic range which is reflected in this e-xhibition. From impressionist works like ‘Anchored‘ and ‘Eze nmuo‘ to abstracts such as ‘ Nze-Okaruo‘ and ‘Harvest‘, he tells the story of his African environment. In ‘African Lady‘, you get a strong sense of cubism, Braque and Picasso, while ‘Nze-Okaruo‘ plays with caricature, colour, and orphism in a way that would have tickled Delaunay. The Fauvist painting style of ‘Nwanyi‘ and ‘Agboho‘ do not pass unnoticed to the trained eye, nor does the fiery glow in the background of ‘Bonny Village‘ to the untrained, the texture of clothing in ‘Nkponkiti‘, the symbolic use of a peaceful, monochromatic blue in ‘Rest‘ and ‘Jumeta Village‘, the fluid, carefree brush strokes of ‘Dancers‘ that bring it to life with motion and rhythm. These are all very conscientious decisions by the artist. While Gogo adopts many known styles in his productions, he is not bound by them but rather approaches them in his own way. An eclectic approach, which we have fondly dubbed ‘Gogoism’.

So without further ado, let’s explore Gogo’s world of artistic expression! By the time you’re done, you’ll most likely understand his works and his style better than we could have explained it. His works have been exhibited both locally and abroad.

Gogo Anyanwu Jr.

Gogo Anyanwu Jr started practicing art in his early years as a child – drawing his parents and siblings. In 1982, he won the first position in a Nigerian National Art competition for children in primary and secondary schools, organised by the National Council for Arts and Culture, Lagos. Over the subsequent years, his interest and skills in drawing and painting improved due to the influence and guidance of his father, Prince Alban Gogo Anyanwu (1934-2023), a graduate of the old ABU Zaria Art School and one of the two pioneer sculpture graduates of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Gogo is a practicing artist who uses paintings to depict his culture and environment. Based in Leeds, UK, he holds a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art (painting) from the University of Uyo, Nigeria, where he graduated with a Second-Class Honours Upper Division. Since his graduation in 1998, he has produced over 400 paintings in different media and has participated in solo and group art exhibitions in Nigeria and the UK. He has facilitated art workshops for young people and adults across West Yorkshire, including the 2023 and 2024 Leeds International African Arts Festival (LIAAF), the 2024 University of Leeds Africa Week and the 2025 Bradford African Festival of Arts (BAFA), UK.
