Firstly, who thought it was appropriate to name a film about an alien symbiote ‘The Last Dance’? It is cheesy AF and shows a lack of creativity. The botched name is the first of many disappointments in this film and to be honest, I am glad this is the last one because I don’t think I can bear to watch them destroy this beloved character.
The film lacked any real direction as the film kept veering wildly to and fro with no real anchor or direction, leaving audiences confused about what was happening. The first Venom premise was anchored on the love/hate relationship between Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and the Venom symbiote. This worked as a premise, but this instalment introduced forgettable villains and even tried a Thanos-type introduction of Knull which fell flat on its face.
Based on the success of Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse where multiple versions of the same character were introduced, other films like Deadpool and Wolverine have also attempted to replicate that success by creating multiple versions of characters. Venom: The Last Dance didn’t want to be left out of the trend. It introduced different varieties of the symbiote…and it was just sad to watch. I don’t want to give away too much but the trailer does feature one of the iterations of Venom and believe me, that was the best of it because the rest were just forgettable…and borderline disturbing.
The best part of this film must be Tom Hardy in a tux. That’s it!
PS. The film has 1 mid credit and 1 post credit scene with the producers having the audacity to hint at sequels. They should take my advice and (for now) let it be. It would be better for Venom to show up somewhere in a Marvel film than having its standalone film.
I will rate Venom: The Last Dance 3/10
